Search engine optimization (SEO), a subset of search engine marketing, is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. SEO can also target specialized searches such as image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. As a marketing strategy, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for in order to increase a site's relevancy. SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other, more noticeable efforts may include adding unique content to a site, and making sure that the content is easily indexed by search engines and also appeals to human visitors. The term SEO can also refer to "search engine optimizers," a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO depends upon the source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term "search engine friendly" describes designs, menus, content management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.

Top 7 Powerful Linking Techniques that Rocket Your Website to the Top

Webmasters put in a tremendous amount of effort to increase the Link Popularity and Page Rank of their Websites. To succeed in your efforts you have to find ways and means of getting the links the Search Engines love and not links which can even be detrimental to your very efforts to increase link popularity. In fact obtaining links from certain sites can even get your website penalized. Once you know the links the Search Engines love and appreciate you can concentrate all your efforts to obtain those links. Let us see what these links are.
1. If you have unique content and excellent resources in your website, other websites will link to your site, thereby giving you a one-way inbound link which is much appreciated by the search engines. Search Engines and visitors also like fresh content so updating it regularly enhances the popularity of your site even further. Again if the site linking to your site is relevant to your site and is of high PR, then the search engines will give high weightage to that link. So it is quality and not quantity that matters.
2. The craze today to increase link popularity is to write articles and submit them to Article Directories, Article Distributors and Article Banks. This is a great way to obtain one-way inbound links through your embedded link in the Resource Box of your article. These articles are again published by webmasters who are in the look out for good content to enhance the quality of their websites thus creating a viral effect. This is a great way to increase link popularity. Good quality articles displaying your expertise have every possibility of being published by authoritative sites thereby giving a quality link and good traffic as well. To obtain the maximum benefit from these inbound links, you should ensure that wherever possible your link is an Anchor text with one of your keywords in it.
3. It is often been said in recent times that Reciprocal Linking is dead. This is not quite true. It is known that Search Engines do not appreciate reciprocal links if your site depends solely on reciprocal links. This is because search engines have found out that there are dubious methods of obtaining links to increase link popularity. Search Engines do appreciate reciprocal links if you exchange links with relevant quality websites. Rather than linking with several high ranking irrelevant websites, it is better to obtain reciprocal links from a few relevant sites of quality, which will indeed be valuable back links.
4. Search Engines recognize and do appreciate links from good quality Directories. Hence to increase link popularity and page rank, you have to submit your site to these directories. There are both free and paid submission directories. There are also good secondary Search Engine friendly directories where you can list your site for free, by paying a fee or by providing a reciprocal link.
5. Another method of obtaining a One-way Inbound link is to offer to write testimonials of products you have successfully tested or used and requesting the vendor to allow you to have a link back from the testimonial to your website.
6. Writing and releasing press releases on a regular basis whenever there are new promotions or major changes in your business can also be a source of good links and traffic too.
7. Participating in Discussion Forums especially in your area of expertise and including your link in the signature; posting useful and interesting comments in Blogs along with your URL, are ways of obtaining one-way links that will increase link popularity.
Successful implementation of these techniques will bring you the rewards you have been dreaming of, such as a high page rank, a surge in traffic and a tremendous increase in sales that will leave your competitors behind.

Organic SEO - the hidden costs of Search engine success

Most of us web marketers start out about the same way. We hear all about the level playing field of the Search Engine Marketing world and we think that we'll be making money in no time. Just put up a quick web site, submit it to the search engines and wait for the checks to start coming in...
Alas, soon reality cracks us in the face. You see, making money on the web is different then making money in the real world, it's just NOT any easier. Ah but let's face it, deep down, we kind of knew that all along.
Case in point is the world of Organic SEO. Organic SEO is the Holy Grail of web marketing. Its promise is that you can get free targeted web traffic to your sites and this traffic will buy whatever it is you're trying to sell. While it's true that a search engine like Google does freely send millions of users to these free listings everyday, and Google does its best to show its visitors only listings that are relevant to what they're looking for. There can be substantial costs associated with these "free" listings.
First off there is time. Hey, we all know that time is money. Getting a top five listing on Google for a"money keyphrase" is not a quick proposition. For any given keyphrase, there can be literally millions of competing listings. It can take months maybe even years to get your site within striking distance of the top spots. Fact is, if you're not in the top five results, you're not going to get any meaningful traffic to your website.
Next factor you need to consider is the cost of performing the actual SEO work. You can hire a SEO professional to do the entire job for you and this could cost thousands of dollars. Plus SEO is not a job that you can do once and forget about. It's an ongoing proposition. The Search Engines are constantly updating their algorithms, what's working today may not work tomorrow. A SEO needs to keep monitoring your pages and performing various tweaks even after you're in the top spots. Make no mistake; they don't do this for free.
Doing your own SEO is often a viable solution; however, while it's usually cheaper, it's not free. You have to learn the techniques that are effective today and then you need to put those techniques into action. All this costs money in the form of learning, plus it takes time and like anything else, it takes practice to get right. Keep in mind, all the time you'll spend learning about SEO and the time you spend actually performing the work is time you can't spend doing other things (things like finding new markets, or following up with existing customers).
So what's the answer? An approach that I've always had success with is to pick the low hanging fruit first. To do this I look for keyphrases that are easier to rank for, phrases that don't have a lot of competition. I can rank for these keyphrases much easier and quicker then the "big money" phrases. An added benefit is that these "long tail keyphrases" are often more targeted and better converting then those other more general phrases.

Quality Link Building

Ever since 2003, the discussion of link building has been a never ending topic. While this discussion began because of how link building could potentially affect your Google Page Rank and how it will list you within those web sites who are fighting for positioning with specific keywords. The way in which this is decided is upon the basiss of incoming links. Search Engines truly believe that these are very important for web sites to have. This is why it has been observed that link popularity actually helps web sites to achieve higher page rank. With this in mind, it is no wonder why link trades will actually help to improve your Search Engine rankings.
While it is quite important for you to build quality links to your web site, it is just as equally important to consider what the quality of these links are as you build them. Here are some of the parameters that you should be using to decide whether the links you are trading really are of the quality that your web site requires in order to position your web site properly in the Search Engines:
1. Search Engines will give your links more weight when they come from other web sites that are related to your business or niche, as represented on your web site. As such, these links will benefit your site a lot more than links from nonrelated web sites would.
2. You should do your best to get links from web sites that have a high Google page rank. These web sites really should have at least a PR3, if not higher.
3. Whatever you do, make sure that your web site does NOT get listed on a FFA (Free For All) links page. While these directories will allow you to instantly add a back link to your web site, they also do not have a specific theme and thus they are willing to give out links to any web sites that request to have a link there. However, if you get a FFA back link they will negatively impact your Search Engine positioning. Therefore, they should be avoided at all cost.
4. In the same way as you need to avoid FFA link pages, you also need to avoid getting links from web sites that have porn or gambling material on them. This is because your site will no longer be friendly for families and thus many web sites will not want to link to your web site, thus you will be harming your web site's standing in the Search Engines. However, if you have a pornographic or gambling web site, you can ignore this "rule."
Of course, these are only a few of the really important factors that you have to take into consideration whenever you are trying to implement a successful link building campaign for your web site. Remember, this is a very important part of any good Search Engine optimization campaign. Therefore, you should really take the time and effort to do it properly.

Want To Get Into Google Quick? Here's The Wrong Way To Do It

Without doubt getting into Google – or the other major search engines is a major goal of most new web sites. Search engine traffic is more targeted and less expensive to maintain. Unfortunately new web site owners are often new at internet marketing and prone to falling for scams and just plainly doing things the wrong way. Here are a few things NOT to do.
* Believing the impossible: Run don’t walk away from any company that guarantees a front page listing for your web site. Even Google cannot do this. There are only two ways to get this 1)Pay per click advertising – which is ludicrously expensive or 2)Your listing will be for an extremely obscure keyword phrase of maybe seven or eight words which is unlikely to bring you any traffic. Of course the “SEO” company has charged you a lot of money for this “service”.
* Spamming the Search Engines: Usually by multiple software submissions. Whilst one submission is often not enough for the small and medium sized search engines, the larger ones may ban you for spamming them. Many of the search engines know the various submission software packages and automatically ignore them. Hand submission is always best and the popularity of the search engines means that they may take some time to respond to your request – so patience. Conventional wisdom states that it can take a new site up to six months to be spidered by the major search engines. DMOZ is even longer.
* Keyword stuffing: By putting the same few keywords continually on your web site and in your meta tags. Use your keywords naturally.
* Hidden or Inappropriate Text: Search engines work by scanning pages for certain keywords which are submitted into a search request and then display the results for the searcher. Don’t be tempted to hide these keywords by using the same color text and background. Similarly don’t put keywords on your web site that are not appropriate to the site. In particular do not stuff your site with competitor names and slogans. This will probably get you banned.
* Doorway Pages: This concept is still sold by some less than scrupulous SEO companies, even though the major search engines banned them a long time ago. A doorway page is a page with little content on it, especially constructed to attract search engines. They are now banned because they offer very little to the visitor.
* Link farms: These are web sites that are put up to only include links. They typically have a considerable number of links – often in the hundreds – and very little content. These links are of no use whatsoever to your web site and in some cases can be detrimental to your search engine listings. When you get asked for a link always check the site asking for the link.
Search engines are very sophisticated now a days and the algorithms they use are constantly changing and always secret. They know these tricks and using them runs the risk of your web site being banned!

Knowing Your Keywords

Search engine optimization (S E O) is a task for the professionals. However, there,s no reason why you should not try to understand it so you could practice it yourself if only for maintenance purposes.
It's a Keywords Game
S E O is about making your website one of the top results in a search engine query. What search engines do is index web pages. These web pages are scanned and the keywords are indexed by the software made for the purpose. There are also programs to relate the words found to one another so as to find a unifying thread and determine the topic or the purpose of the page. After that, these pages will be ranked according to their category (their purpose). When a keyword is queried, the search engine will yield only the pages that are relevant to the keyword used; these web pages will be those that contain the keyword and related keywords in abundance.
Being returned on top of the list, therefore, necessitates determining the keyword and the related keywords for which you wish to garner top rank. After this crucial step, you need to optimize for these keywords.
Determining Your S E O Keyword(s)
How do you determine the keyword for which you should optimize? This involves (1) determining your site,s purpose; (2) finding out the terms that people who are looking for accounting services online would be likely to use to search the internet; and (3) weighing everything against the competition for the keyword(s).
In the case of an accounting firm, the natural choice of keywords would be ,accounting services., This keyword phrase fulfills the number 1 criterion for the accounting firm obviously provides accounting services. It also fulfills criterion number 2 for it,s the most likely choice of keyword when people are looking for accounting services online. However, it does not pass criterion number 3 for Google,s keyword tool will tell you that there,s stiff competition for this phrase.
Admittedly, this measure comes from the number of advertisers competing for the keyword in Google,s Ad Words scheme, but it is a good enough gauge of the general degree of competition for this keyword.
Google,s tool will show you possible variations on the same theme. In the above example, Google,s keyword tool shows that there are people searching for the term ,accounting bookkeeping services, but there,s hardly any competition in AdWords for it. This makes this keyword phrase a good replacement. Thus, instead of optimizing its website for the keyword phrase, accounting services, the accounting firm may be better off optimizing for the keyword phrase, accounting bookkeeping services.
Optimizing Your Web Pages
At this point in the S E O process, you will have to apply your chosen keywords to your meta tags and to your web page content. The more keywords (and their related keywords) there are, the better optimized the site is and the better its, rank in the result for an ,accounting bookkeeping services, query.
